“You’re my mommy”

Monday, March 12th, 2012

The bad news: Both girls are sick (ear infections). The good news: They’re both on antibiotics and on the mend. And the semi-amusing news/story: After I got a feverish Zoe some water and changed her pajamas shortly after midnight this morning, Zoe asked if I would sleep with her. Her bed is small and I knew neither one of us would get a good night’s sleep if I stayed, so I told her I couldn’t and, when pressed, said it was because Daddy needed me. “Why?” she asked, to which I replied (not being able to think of anything better), “Oh, he’s really tired.” She thought for a moment and then said, “But Mommy, you’re not Daddy’s mommy – you’re my mommy.”

Well played, Zoe – well played.

(Another) little shopper

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

Avery doesn’t share her sister’s love for shopping (her attention span is short, and she prefers running around over browsing at things in stores), but you wouldn’t have guessed that today. Grandma and Grandpa are in town, and she seemed to really enjoy her morning shopping trip with them!

Swim class

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Shortly after Avery was born we started swim classes for Zoe; every Saturday morning Avery would sit in her stroller and watch from the side of the pool as her sister splashed around. Things are quite different these days, as Avery is now doing some splashing herself: She became a “water wiggler” last weekend! And though I was curious/concerned about how she would do, she was comfortable from the start and had big smiles throughout class. (Perhaps it helped that she’s been blowing bubbles in the bathtub for the past few months.)

As for Zoe, she just graduated from a “frog” to a “goby.” Hooray!

Daddy’s friend

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Q went out of town for business today; the scene at our house at 7 AM included the girls, still in pajamas, waving to their dad from the front window as he stepped into a cab. Shortly after he left, Avery confirmed with me that he was going to the airport and then asked, “Who’s his friend?” I was puzzled by the question until she asked who was driving him. She thought the cab-driver was his friend!

Child Whisperer

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Q knew way more about babies (and kids) than I did when we first became parents. And though I feel like the knowledge/experience gap has narrowed considerably in the last 5+ years, he still has an advantage over me when it comes to thinking like a kid and getting a kid to do something she doesn’t want to. I was reminded of this the other night, when Zoe refused to take a bath, something she doesn’t normally do. I tried a few things to get her to budge, but when she didn’t – and my patience clearly started to wane – Q swooped in with a plan of his own. “I have an idea – let’s do a science experiment in the bath!” he suggested, and Zoe responded with an enthusiastic “Yeh!”

I watched in amazement as Zoe peeled off her clothes and happily stepped into the bath, and as I later told Q, I could only think of one thing. He’s like the Child Whisperer!

Avery in close up

Monday, March 5th, 2012

Q also took the pictures below at yesterday’s event – and I’m loving the details (the messy curls, long lashes, etc.) that his new camera is able to capture. I can imagine years from now  looking at the second picture and wanting so badly to pinch those cheeks!

Purim fun

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

A favorite spring tradition is the Purim Carnival at the girls’ preschool, and this year’s event happened to fall on one of the nicest days of the year! It was sunny and warm and just the perfect time for the girls (who dressed as matching fairies) to run and slide around.

The singing toothbrush

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

Q was given a Justin Bieber-singing toothbrush for his birthday, and the prank gift (from Fink, of course) has since taken on a life of its own at our house. Zoe quickly adopted the gift as hers, and now not a night goes by that we don’t hear the catchy refrain to “Somebody to love” coming from the bathroom. The toothbruth has led not only to cleaner teeth (for both Zoe and Avery) but also many impromptu dance parties – like last night, for example, when the girls were singing and jumping around to the song on Zoe’s bed. At one point Zoe yelled out, “I love Justin Bieber,” providing us with a glimpse into the future, when she’ll say the same about some other baby-faced pop star and really mean it.

Six months of school – in pictures (Avery)

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Here’s a batch of Avery pics. And as you’ll see, art is a big focus in her class!

Six months of school – in pictures

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

One of the things I’ve been working on lately is a yearbook for the preschool. Zoe loves the one from her first year so much (she sometimes sleeps with it under her pillow) that I just had to make sure another one was made for her last year at the school. It’s going to be a lot of work, but the benefit of sifting through thousands of pictures is that I’ve come across some sweet ones of the girls.

Here’s the first batch – of Zoe.
