Last day of school

Friday, June 12th, 2015

The school year officially ended yesterday – but not before we took a few photos of the girls. Avery is posing with two of her teachers, and one of her good (new) friends – and Zoe is with her bestie, Zachary.

Done with kindergarten

Thursday, June 11th, 2015

In honor of the last day of school, Avery shared her thoughts yesterday afternoon on kindergarten ending…

Teacher Zoe

Thursday, June 11th, 2015

To cap off their unit on careers, the kids in Zoe’s class were asked to come to school on Tuesday dressed up as what they want to be when they grow up. Zoe had a hard time choosing between dressing up as a doctor, vet, or teacher; ultimately she chose to be a teacher. And she was super excited to be able to wear one of my purses and a pair of my (real) glasses.

(Almost) six!

Her birthday was still ten days away – but since school is almost over, Avery celebrated in her classroom yesterday morning.

Buttons

Tuesday, June 9th, 2015

Avery is the one in the family who (literally) stops and smells the roses – whenever she sees something eye-catching she’ll take a moment (no matter what else is going on) to admire it. The other morning, for example, I was running late and flying around the house to gather up what I needed when Avery stopped me and pointed out that she liked what I was wearing. “Oh, I like the buttons on your sweater, Mommy,” she told me. “They’re really pretty – like jewels.” To me, they were plain ‘ole buttons, but I loved that they were special to her and that her words forced me to pause for a moment. It was really quite refreshing.

Celebrating kindergarten, part II

Sunday, June 7th, 2015

Two more happy pics from Friday. (Given how anxious Zoe was to return to class and how hungry and grumpy Avery was right after the performance, I was shocked – and thrilled – at how well the first one turned out.)

Celebrating kindergarten

Saturday, June 6th, 2015

They don’t call it “graduating,” but the girls’ school does call it celebrating! On Friday, the kindergarteners put on a show for the families to celebrate moving on to first grade. (A highlight for me was the You are My Sunshine/This Little Light of Mine mash-up/round that we captured in third video.) I’ll hold off on the mushy I-can’t-believe-my-baby-is-no-longer-in-kindergarten sentiments; long-time readers know me well enough to know what I’m thinking!

Camping, part II

Friday, June 5th, 2015

Avery spent much of our first camping day playing with friends down by the beach. Q and I stayed behind, but it’s clear from these photos – taken by one of the dads – that she had a good time.

Camping

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2015

A few days after getting back from Disneyland we went on another adventure: camping with Avery’s kindergarten class. I’m not much of a camper, but I didn’t mind roughing it for one night – especially given how beautiful the location was (the campground is right on the coast) and how much fun both girls had!

“Who wouldn’t be excited?”

Monday, June 1st, 2015

When looking at Disney pictures the other day, I commented that Avery looked excited in a photo. “It was at Disneyland, Mommy,” Zoe responded with an exasperated tone. “Who wouldn’t be excited about Disneyland?” Glad that at eight-going-on-29 and seemingly all grown up, the place hasn’t lost its charm with her!

At Disney, part III

…And some highlights from our time at the other side of Disneyland – at Disney California Adventure.

At Disney, part II

Friday, May 29th, 2015

Our first big batch of photos, starting with our Sunday arrival in Orange County (where the girls put their ears on right away) and going through our first day at Disney. My favorite thing here: The look on Avery’s face as she gazes up at Ariel in the third-to-last pic. She loves her princesses!

At Disney

Thursday, May 28th, 2015

We got home from our trip to Disneyland yesterday, and in two words our time there was exhausting and exhilarating! We spent our first day (12 hours!) at Disneyland and the next day at Disney California Adventure, which the girls and our travel partners seemed to like just as much as the other side. We hit almost every major ride (with Big Thunder Mountain, California Screamin’, Matterhorn Bobsleds and Radiator Springs among the group’s favorites) and met almost every princess (though Avery was disappointed about missing out on meeting the Evil Queen). I’ve got a collection of photos to share but will start with the obligatory just-inside-the-gates family shot.

Avery pondering Disneyland

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015

Before we left for Disneyland I asked Avery (who doesn’t remember having been there before) for a few thoughts on our upcoming trip. She was in a silly mood, and the videos are fairly amusing.

Artists at the lake

Tuesday, May 26th, 2015

Zoe’s second grade class walked to a nearby lake for some artistic inspiration one day last week; Q joined them and took these pics.
