Before Zoe began kindergarten six years ago, I conducted a little interview<\/a> with her – and I decided to ask the same set of questions just before she started middle school. She’ll still be at the same school (Brandeis is K-8), but she has a block schedule with lots of different teachers and electives – so it’s a whole new world!<\/p>\n

-What do you think middle school will be like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A lot different than elementary school. (Long pause and a laugh)<\/em> I think it will be cool with all the different classes we go to and a lot of new people.<\/p>\n

-What will you miss most about elementary school?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Having a really strong bond with the teacher, because you only have one.<\/p>\n

-Do you think you’ll make new friends in middle school?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, and I’m excited to see all the new kids that come.<\/p>\n

-How do you think Avery will do in fourth grade?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think Avery will really enjoy fourth grade. I think she’ll really like the teachers.<\/p>\n

-What do you think you’ll learn in middle school?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think I’ll learn a lot more than I did in elementary school, especially because we have a specialized teacher for each thing. What we learn are things the teachers know a lot about it. I think we’ll learn a lot of new things that we didn’t know before.<\/p>\n

-What are you most excited to learn about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m most excited to learn about new and different things in math. It’s my favorite subject.<\/p>\n

-When you’re done at this school you’ll be 14. What do you think you’ll be like at that age?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think I’ll be (pauses<\/em>) kind of the same but a little bit different because I’ll have had different experiences.<\/p>\n

-You’ll still be a kid at 14. What’s the best thing about being a kid?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Being able to play with other kids.<\/p>\n

-What’s the hardest thing about being a kid?<\/strong><\/p>\n

That’s really not that much – but sometimes balancing school with friends and stuff.<\/p>\n

-At what age do you think you’ll be a grown-up?<\/strong><\/p>\n

That depends on if you’re thinking about it logically or religiously. Religiously it’s like when you have your bar or bat mitzvah – but logically I think it’s after college, so 23 or 24.<\/p>\n

-What do you want to be when you’re a grown-up?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I want to be a teacher.<\/p>\n

-What do think\u00c2\u00a0will be the best thing\u00c2\u00a0about being a\u00c2\u00a0grown-up?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Getting to make your own decisions.<\/p>\n
