In first grade each child also wrote a message for their parents in their journal, and when I opened up Avery&#8217;s and saw what she had written tears immediately sprang to my eyes. &#8220;I am happy,&#8221; she wrote (with her own spelling). As I told her teacher, that&#8217;s all I needed to hear.
