The books are formulaic and can hardly be considered high literature, but Zoe and some of her friends still love them! Earlier this year, Zoe and I (when looking through the titles of the hundreds published) discovered that there were no Jewish-holiday themed ones, and we decided to write our own story. And so, Hannah the Hanukkah Fairy was born.

Zoe came up with the outline for the story a few months ago, and we’ve been slowly working on writing it ever since. (We put the finishing touches on it on Thursday night.) Working on the 1,500-word story, which Zoe shared with her classmates and teachers on Friday, was a lot of fun for me, and I hope for Zoe, too. And more importantly, I hope it teaches her more about creativity and innovation: If something doesn’t exist and you will really want it, then just go ahead and create/build/plan/write it!

-M

There’s a popular book series for young kids called Rainbow Magic; each book revolves around a different fairy (e.g. Cara the Camp Fairy, Stella the Star Fairy, Emma the Easter Fairy) whose magical objects have been stolen by the series’ villain, Jack Frost.
